Academic mentoring year 11 -13 students 2010.
This year we are taking a more rigorous approach to ensuring our students are given the best advice and encouragement in their preparation for NCEA and their career paths. We have put in place a regular academic mentoring programme for each student studying towards NCEA, whereby they have been assigned to a teacher who will check on their progress towards meeting assignment dates and achieving credits throughout the year. The mentor teacher will also assist with study advice, directing them towards appropriate subject choices for careers or for next year as they move into year 12 or year 13.
It is envisaged that the teacher mentor will meet with each of the students in their mentor group once a term and informally more frequently as necessary. Time has been set aside in the school calendar in the last two weeks of terms one, two and three and in week three of term four to allow the formal interviews to happen.
The formal interview will incorporate a Personal Action Plan, a Credits summary sheet and general discussion around their work, plans for the future and goals for achievement. Students will be asked to fill in their Personal Action Plan in as far as they can before their first interview. The Credits summary sheet will be an A3 size so they have plenty of room to write on it and to update it as the year goes on. Students have been given a School Year Planner to transfer assignment dates on to and to take home so they can keep track for themselves of when assignments are due as a whole.
Students have also been provided with a clear view folder to retain their Personal Action Plan and their Credits summary in, and any other material that will be useful as part of the mentoring discussion. This could also include CV material or material from their Senior Life skills programme. This clear view folder will be retained by the year level dean during the year, although it may be retrieved at any time by the mentor if the students wish to have informal discussions or assistance.
Parents are, as always, welcome to discuss their daughter’s progress with her year level dean at any time.
If you wish to have any further information about this programme, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Mrs Morton, the Deputy Principal, has oversight of the programme.
