NGAIRE JEAN CRAIG SCHOLARSHIPS
Ngaire Jean Craig made a generous bequest to assist students of Wanganui Girls’ College with university study. Miss Craig was Dux and Head Girl when a student at the College in the 1930s. She taught at Wanganui Girls College from 1942 – 48, and again from 1950 – 1959. She was awarded a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship to the United States in 1963, and spent time teaching there before returning to New Zealand to take up senior positions in NZ secondary schools in Hamilton and Auckland, retiring in 1979. An enthusiastic teacher of English, she inspired a love of literature in her students that they still have today.
The criteria for the scholarship are that it is for any Wanganui Girls College student, past or present, who intends to study at university. The student must demonstrate high academic ability but who for reasons of financial hardship, may find it difficult to attend university.
Applications must be on the application form that can be downloaded from this page. The closing date is 31 October in any year. Successful applicants will be presented with their award at the school's annual prizegiving in December.
